On a brisk early morning in January, Boeing delivers the DIRECTV 11 satellite to the Payload Processing Facility at Sea Launch Home Port. The satellite arrives in a special container on a flatbed truck. The team unloads the spacecraft and prepares it for testing, fueling and then encapsulation in a payload fairing.
The Payload Unit, carrying the DIRECTV 11 satellite, is ready for integration with the Zenit-3SL rocket. The payload team moves the precious cargo out of the Payload Processing Facility, onto a specially designed transporter, that takes it to the assembly hall on the Sea Launch Commander. An air-conditioning unit is positioned at the front, maintaining proper temperature and pressure for the satellite through the orange tubing. |
Yellow brackets hanging on cables from cranes above on the Launch Platform are attached to the rocket in two positions. With all parts in place, the rocket is lifted 200 feet, up to the hangar on the platform.
When the rocket reaches the hangar, it is brought inside and postioned on the transporter-erector.
The rocket is rolled onto the launch deck and erected on the launch pad for final tests, before the Odyssey departs for the launch site.
Longshoremen remove the gangplank and then the lines are let go and... she eases away from the pier. |
As the traditional Russian departure music blares through the PA system, the national flags come out in proud display. |
The Odyssey slowly pulls out of port, passes by the Payload Processing Facility and heads out of the harbor.
With the lines let go and the engines starting up, the Sea Launch Commander pulls away from the pier and into the harbor.
The Odyssey travels about 10-12 kts, while the Sea Launch Commander can do about 20 kts (depending on sailing conditions in transit). So we give the Odyssey a head start. Here, the vessels meet at sea and proceed with various interactive schedules, as they head for the launch site. Our photographer captures the beautiful scene from the Sea Launch helicopter.
The Odyssey is ballasted and ready for action. |
